Important Details About Ghana’s New SIM Re-Registration Exercise. Yesterday, the Minister of Communication and Digitisation announced that there will be a SIM re-registration for phone users starting in October 2021 and ending on March 31, 2022.

The exercise will be conducted to help curb fraud and criminal activities.

1. New Subscribers Will Need Their Ghana Card To Purchase A New SIM Card

Any new telecom subscriber who is a citizen will need to use their Ghana Card if they want to purchase a new SIM card.

Businesses buying SIM cards in bulk will need to verify their business registration documents with the Registrar General’s Department to verify the authenticity of their businesses.

2. There Will Be An A SIM Registration App For Exisiting Subscribers

Current and existing telecom subscribers will be able to register their existing SIM cards either via USSD and a SIM Registration App which will be released by the Ministry.

The verification of all subscribers and businesses will be against the databases of the National Identification Authority and the Registrar General’s Department where necessary. Indeed, for the Businesses, in addition to verifying from the Registrar General’s Department that that Business is valid, a shareholder or director of the organisation will have to personally be linked to the registration of the SIMs.

3. There Will Be Limit To How Many SIM Cards You Can Register

Individuals will be able to register a total of 10 SIM Cards across all networks. Non-Citizens will be limited to 3 SIM cards across all networks.

The National Communication Authority (NCA) will help enable subscribers (individuals and Businesses) to check and verify all SIM Cards which have been registered in their names.

4. Non-Citizens And Foreigners Can Acquire SIM Cards With Passports And Travel Cards

Non-Citizens and foreigners visiting Ghana will be able to acquire a SIM card using their passports or travel cards. Foreigners visiting Ghana will only be able to use their SIM cards for 30 days before its deactivated. In order to use a SIM card for more than 30 days, visitors will need to obtain a Non-Citizen Ghana card.

Mobile Operators will be verifying passports and travels against international databases before registering and activating SIM Cards for travelers and foreigners
